When reading “Why Race Matters in International Relations”, written by Kelebogile Zvobgo and Meredith Loken, I was reminded of an argument made by Enrique Dussel’s   in “Europe, Modernity, and Eurocentrism” which I have recently studied in my Critical Black Studies course. In his work, Dussel discusses the foundation of modernity in Europe- more importantly, how race and racism influenced modernity and eurocentrism. His main thesis is that race was constructed to create universalized differences in order to hold power over individuals. Dussel argues the idea that race and racism were not innate, they were created by the minority of white European land owners who were entirely outnumbered by the rest of the population in order to divide them and ultimately conquering them. This was briefly mentioned in Zvobgo and Loken’s work as they exampled ways in which race has been manipulated through out our history.   Personally, I find that the commonly used terms “modernity”...

Feminism has been created in order to try to break out of the instutional and soft power the government uses on its public to create gender roles. In order to do something as extreme as perpetuate strict gender roles the use of multiple types of power would be necessary. Institutional power was necessary in order to have law enforcement and government officials upholding these sexist norms. Companies saw an area of the market that they could capitalize on by creating different products and advertisements that appealed to both genders separately. With both the government and capitalitalis kept happy, society as a whole was conditioned to believe that this way of society would be the best for everyone. It wasn’t until the feminist movement was brought to the forefront of the media that many women felt they deserved a more pivotal role in society.  The government sets the societal norms by enacting different legislatures and regulating the information that is conveyed to the public. A...

International Relations realism, International Relations Liberalism, and Constructivism were very apparent in the time leading up to World War I and the time period immediately succeeding it. There were many reasons for the outbreak of WWI, however, one of the major reasons was the  European powers’ building up their respective militaries. As each nation saw another improving upon a facet of its military, it began looking for ways to counter it. This was very apparent in both Germany and England engaging in a massive build up of their navies, in order to ensure that in the event of war, they would have control over the oceans. Every nation saw a build up of forces in another as a threat to its own security, thus ultimately leading to the events of WWI. Also importantly during this time period, in terms of IR realism, was the colonization of territory across the world by European powers, significantly in Africa. European nations saw how resour...

In “The Promise of Institutionalist Theory,” Robert Keohane and Lisa Martin dissect and analyze many of Mearsheimer’s assertions surrounding institutionalism. Surrounding the topic of NATO, many of Mearsheimer’s deductions can be related directly to the current situation unfolding between Russia and Ukraine on their border. Mearsheimer asserts, “NATO played a role in preventing World War II and helping the West win the Cold War” but also that  “NATO was a manifestation of the bipolar distribution of power in Europe during the Cold War, and it was that balance of power, not NATO per se, that provided the key to maintaining stability on the continent.” Institutionalists, specifically liberal institutionalists who perceive an institution as rooted within the realities of interest and power, acknowledge that NATO may not be able to create viable stability under any imaginable circumstances. This is highly relevant to the conflict occurring between Russia and Ukraine, as NATO is one of...

World War 2 International Politics  World War 2 taught the world of human nature, economics, politics, and things humanity would need to avoid to prevent another world war from happening. We know now that international politics and relations are a crucial element in resolving international and global issues and conflicts between countries. There is blatant recognition that unresolved international conflict from World War 1 set the foundation for World War 2. Adolf Hilter became a rising power in Germany both economically and politically after years of political unrest and economic instability in Germany after World War 1. With Germany a rearmed nation with Hilter the prominent political leader, it was easy for Germany to ally with Italy and Japan, signing political treaties with both countries. With Hilter invading Poland, driving Great Britain and France to declare war on Germany World War 2 began. By the time America entered World War 2, after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor...
